Respect for fallen soldiers
April 26, 2006
The decision to not lower the Canadian Flag on the Peace Tower was made respecting the equality of all Canadian military personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty. Under the former government, this practice was inconsistent at best. The current government wishes to respect the policy that was actually reinstated in 2005 to confer equal honors upon all fallen soldiers. This move is supported by the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans across Canada, and the Royal Canadian Legion. Cliff Chadderton, Chairman of the National Council of Veteran Associations, which represents 55 Veterans groups in Canada, also supports this action.

The decision to limit media access to the ceremony of the arrival home of the fallen soldiers was made respecting the wishes of three or four families of the soldiers, and is supported by soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Memorial services will be held in the coming weeks when all Canadians will have the opportunity to participate, as well as Canada’s national day of Remembrance November 11th.

Let us please focus on honoring these brave young Canadians, make clear our commitment to helping the people of Afghanistan and offer our thoughts and prayers to the families as they grieve.
