Menzies Responds to Budget 2006: Praises Government tax cuts and benefits to Canadians

OTTAWA – Ted Menzies, Member of Parliament for Macleod and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Cooperation, rose in the House of Commons yesterday to support the Government’s new Budget.

“Hard working Canadians in Alberta will have more money in their pockets as a result of the first budget of Canada’s new government.” said Menzies. “It provides real tax relief for every person in the province regardless of age or income level.”

The new Government’s first budget offers nearly $20 billion in tax relief for Canadians over the next two years – more than the last four federal budgets combined. As a result of these measures, Albertans will pay $1 billion less in taxes in 2007.

Menzies also addressed the appreciation that farmers in the riding are showing for the $1.5 billion that this budget brings to agriculture.  It addition, it provides significant support that will be available for seniors, students, and new Canadians as a result of the budget.

Canada’s new Government has presented a balanced budget that significantly cuts taxes, focuses federal spending and pays down the debt, which differs significantly from the previous government that overtaxed Canadians while spending erratically on ever-changing priorities.

“The government is following through on the commitments made during the election campaign,” said Menzies. “The results of our acting on these priorities will be a stronger Alberta and a better life for all Canadians.”
