Menzies Named Hardest Working Member of Parliament
June 03, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario – Ted Menzies, Member of Parliament for Macleod and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, was honoured yesterday as the Hardest Working MP at the prestigious Parliamentarian of the Year Awards. Presented by Maclean’s magazine, in association with the Historica Dominica Institute, the event honours Canada’s most deserving federal representatives, as voted by their peers in the House of Commons. Menzies was quick to credit his success to the work of his staff. “I am incredibly fortunate to be supported by a dedicated team,” he said. “Were it not for their tireless commitment to my constituents and my portfolio, I would not have received this honour.” If he’s not traveling back and forth between Ottawa and his southern Alberta riding, Menzies arrives in his office shortly after 6:00 a.m., arriving home after most people have gone to bed. Despite his gruelling schedule, his cheerful disposition and unfailing command of the day’s issues earn him universal respect and admiration from his political colleagues. “I have no ambition to quit or slow down,” said Menzies. “The time will come when I’ll get tired of flying back and forth, commuting between Ottawa and Claresholm. But I honestly don’t see that day yet.” The fourth annual survey asked all Members of Parliament to nominate the best MPs in seven categories. Over 70% responded, casting votes for Members both in and outside their parties. The votes were converted to a points system to ensure that larger parties did not have an advantage.
