Governments of Canada and Alberta Stimulate Economy
July 22, 2009
Ottawa – Ted Menzies, Member of Parliament for Macleod and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, and the Honourable Ted Morton, MLA for Foothills-Rocky View and Minister of Sustainable Resource Development, are pleased to announce joint federal and provincial funding to upgrade Highway 22 from north of the junction with Highway 1 to south of the junction with Highway 1A. This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the Alberta economy by reducing red tape, creating jobs for Alberta people, and getting shovels in the ground sooner. The government of Canada will invest up to $2,550,000 in the project. The Province of Alberta will contribute the balance of the total eligible project cost of up to $5,101,000. “Funding for this project comes at a time when economic stimulus is needed most,” said Menzies. “I am pleased that this project will improve transportation efficiency and create local jobs.” “The provincial government is pleased to collaborate with the federal government in these highway improvements,” said Morton. “Highway 22 provides important and scenic access to our area, meaning both residents and visitors will benefit from these needed upgrades.” This project is one of 62 projects across the province that will break ground quickly thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $132 million. Together with municipal and other contributions, the total investment in local infrastructure improvements in Alberta for the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund exceeds $870 million. The governments of Canada and Alberta have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and to flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in Alberta communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
