Canadian Solar Community Sets New World Record for Energy Efficiency and Innovation

OKOTOKS, ALBERTA — Today, the Honourable Ted Menzies, Minister of State (Finance), on behalf of the Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, celebrated Drake Landing Solar Community’s new world record of generating 97 percent of its space heating needs through solar energy. This project is coordinated by the Government of Canada. Minister Menzies also recognized the Drake Landing Solar Community for receiving the prestigious Energy Globe World Award for Sustainability last year.
“Our government continues to support projects that increase energy efficiency and innovation across our country — including right here in Okotoks,” said Minister Menzies. “This world record demonstrates the results this community is achieving by setting new milestones in renewable energy technology.” Drake Landing Solar Community received the prestigious Energy Globe World Award for Sustainability in 2011, giving the community worldwide recognition. The project was selected for its innovative excellence by a jury composed of members of international organizations such as the World Bank and the European Renewable Energy Council. “The Town of Okotoks is extremely proud to be a part of the success of the Drake Landing Solar Community,” said Mayor Robertson. “Being able to reach our energy goals, provide an innovative and environmentally friendly housing option to our residents and maintain the sustainable vision of Okotoks are incredibly important to our community as a whole.” “This is truly an amazing project, second to none in delivering the goods as promised,” said Keith Paget, Manager of Special Projects, Sterling Homes. “As the managing partner and operator of this facility, ATCO Gas is honoured to be part of this record-breaking achievement,” said Bill Stephens, Senior Vice President and General Manager of ATCO Gas. “The continued success of the Drake Landing Solar Community is a reflection of ATCO Gas’s commitment to environmental sustainability.” For more information: www.nrcan.gc.ca/media |
