Did you know that…the Minister of State for Seniors Alice Wong recently highlighted that more than 680,000 of Canada's lowest-income seniors will now benefit from the most significant increase to the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) in 25 years. Canada’s seniors built our country and they deserve our thanks, which is why your government is taking strong action to support seniors and includes the largest Guaranteed Income Supplement increase in a quarter century. Since 2006 your Government has provided over $2.3 billion in annual tax relief for seniors and pensioners, removed 380,000 seniors from the tax rolls completely, introduced pension income splitting, ushered in an automatic renewal of the GIS, made significant investments in affordable housing for low-income seniors, and doubled the pension income credit. As pledged in the Speech from the Throne, your Government will also combat elder abuse in all its forms and raise awareness of this serious issue. We have also extended the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers and eliminated the mandatory retirement age for federally-regulated employees; giving seniors who want to remain active in the workforce the freedom to make that choice. We're also working to introduce the new Pooled Registered Pension Plan to better help older workers save and build their retirement income. Your government received a strong mandate from Canadians to improve seniors' quality of life. That’s why we are working hard to ensure that our policies, programs and services continue to provide opportunities for seniors to improve their well-being and quality of life. Did you know that… John Baird, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, on behalf of the Honourable Vic Toews, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, recently announced that the Government of Canada has listed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as a terrorist group, pursuant to the Criminal Code of Canada. Canadians gave your Government a strong mandate to keep our communities safe and protect their interests, which includes countering threats to the security of Canadians as they emerge. That is why we are taking action to cut off material support to a known terrorist organization. Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for multiple suicide attacks in Pakistan and the attempted bombing of Times Square in New York City in May 2010. Canada is not immune from the threat of international terrorism-that’s why we must do our part and be vigilant in combating terrorism. For more information click here

Did you know that… Recently, Ministers Fast and Gosal met with Indo-Canadian business leaders and discussed your Government’s progress to date enhancing economic cooperation between Canada and India. Jobs and economic growth to benefit Canadians continues to be our focus. This is why we will continue to deliver free trade leadership. In June 2010, Prime Minister Harper and Prime Minister Singh set an ambitious goal of increasing bilateral trade to $15 billion annually by 2015. Budget 2011, the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, provides $12 million over five years for a Canada-India Research Centre of Excellence. The Canada-India joint study shows that freer trade in goods and services could increase Canada’s gross domestic product by at least US$6 billion, and bilateral trade could increase by 50 percent. With trade representing 60 percent of Canada’s economy, increasing trade and investment with India is vital to protecting and strengthening the financial security of Canadians –now and into the future.
