Did you know...? - Edition 86
June 03, 2011
Did You Know That… Statistics Canada recently announced that Canada's economy grew by 3.9% in the first quarter of 2011. This represented Canada’s largest level of quarterly economic growth in the past year. Your Government is focused on what matters to Canadians – the economy and jobs. Our continued economic growth shows Canada’s Economic Action Plan is working and we are on the right track for Canadian families. Canada’s economy has now grown for seven straight quarters, with nearly 540,000 new jobs created since July 2009. While that’s positive news, too many Canadians are still looking for work and the global economic recovery remains fragile. We need to stay the course with our prudent, low-tax plan to protect the economy and create jobsThat’s why our priority when Parliament returns will be the introduction and passage of the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan: A Low-Tax Plan for Jobs and Growth to keep Canada’s economy on the right track. Did You Know That…Recently, Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry, when addressing the 2011 Canadian Telecom Summit reaffirmed our Government’s commitment to delivering a Digital Economy Strategy and economic growth in the telecommunication sector. We are focused on what matters to Canadians – creating jobs and growth. Our Government is ensuring Canada has a globally competitive telecom sector that supplies more markets with more innovative and new products and services. We are leading the way on creating our first-ever digital strategy, focusing and delivering on five key areas, including building a first-class infrastructure, adopting ICTs to boost productivity and competitiveness, acquiring the skills needed to take advantage of the opportunities those technologies provide, growing successful Canadian companies to supply digital technologies to global markets, and ensuring made-in-Canada content across all platforms so that we can bring Canada to the world. For the past five years, we have created an environment in which the digital economy and telecom industry has grown. That is why our government is committed to the digital economy because we know the benefits it can bring to Canadian families and consumers. Our Government will stay the course with our prudent, low-tax plan to protect the economy and create jobs, and continue to focus on strengthening and growing Canada’s telecommunication industry. Canadians are delighted that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be visiting Canada on their first international tour as husband and wife. This honour is a testament to the close relationship Canada holds with members of our Royal Family. Royal Tours are opportunities for Canadians to take pride in our traditions, history, and institutions. During their stay, The Royal Couple will visit the National Capitol Region: June 30 – July 2, Montreal, Quebec: July 2, Quebec City, Quebec: July 3, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island: July 3 – 4, Summerside, Prince Edward Island: July 4, Yellowknife, North West Territories: July 4 – 6, and Calgary, Alberta: July 6 – 8. This Royal Tour – the third such tour in less than 2 years – is one of many milestones Canadians will celebrate in the coming years, including the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812, Sir John A MacDonald’s 200th birthday, and Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017. We look forward to welcoming The Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge this summer and look forward to this tour being the start of a lasting relationship between Canada and The Royal Couple. The top priority of our Government is the economy. Our top legislative priority is to pass the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan: A Low-Tax Plan for Jobs and Growth. In addition to passing the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our Government will move forward with tabling legislation to reform the Senate and combat Human Smuggling. The Government will also seek an extension to the NATO Mission in Libya. There are also many other priorities that Canadians elected us to take action on. In the fall, we will introduce legislation to phase out subsidies to political parties, eliminate once and for all the wasteful long-gun registry, provide choice for Western Canadian farmers by eliminating the monopoly of the Canadian Wheat Board, and table our comprehensive law and order legislation that we committed to passing within 100 sitting days following the election. Canadians gave us a mandate to stay focused on the economy and pass measures aimed at strengthening both our economic recovery and our country, and we’re following through on these commitments with this parliamentary agenda.
