Did You Know That… Recently, Minister Aglukkaq, Canada’s Health Minister, along with provincial and territorial colleagues, launched a national engagement strategy on curbing childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is on the rise in Canada. The maintenance of healthy weights is crucial to childhood growth and overall health. Obesity can lead to many other health issues that we normally see in adults, including Type 2 Diabetes and high blood pressure. Your Government is working to reverse this trend by working with provincial and territorial governments build a Canadian strategy. We are commencing a national engagement strategy with Canada’s medical community, parents, teachers and youth themselves on the best practices to promote and maintain healthy weights for young Canadians. This will be the first national dialogue of its kind in Canada. Never before have we brought together such broad and diverse groups to work together on the issue of childhood obesity. Your Government is working to give children the healthiest possible start in life. Did You Know That…Recently, your Government highlighted the successful passage of another piece of legislation to make our streets and communities safer.  Your Government is committed to making our streets and communities safer by getting tough on crime. For over 40 years, our criminal justice system was going in the wrong direction as it was focused more on the rights of criminals instead of the rights of victims.  We committed to change things and we have delivered. Since forming Government, we have passed over 20 laws to get tough on crime and make our streets and communities safer, and we are pleased to announce that the legislation to end sentence discounts for multiple murders has passed Parliament and will soon become law. This follows the recent passage of legislation to repeal the faint hope clause for murderers and legislation to protect children from online sexual exploitation. Your Government will continue our efforts to pass important legislation to toughen our laws and make our streets and communities safer. For more information: http://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/index.html
