Did You Know That…  Recently, Statistics Canada reported that 22,000 new jobs were created in December. The unemployment rate stands at 7.6 per cent – the lowest since January 2009. The increase was due entirely to new full-time jobs in the private sector. Gains were particularly strong in the manufacturing sector. Your Government’s number one priority continues to be the economy.  December’s job growth again demonstrates that Canada's Economic Action Plan is working.  Our economy has grown for the past five straight quarters, and recovered more jobs than were lost during the global recession. Since July 2009 over 460,000 new jobs have been created across the country.   As we have said all along, the global recovery remains fragile. That’s why we are continuing to implement our job-creating, low-tax plan. In the words of the National Post, “it should perhaps come as no surprise that an Abacus Data poll this week found Canadians associate the Conservatives with economic recovery and low taxes and the Liberals with weak leadership and internal divisions.”  For more information:  http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/110107/dq110107a-eng.htm

Did You Know That…
Recently, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced  investments that are a part of your Government’s plan to protect and preserve jobs in Canada’s forestry sector. Your Government’s number one priority continues to be the economy. With the economic recovery still fragile, we will continue to take action to protect jobs in Canada, including important forestry jobs throughout the country. Each and every day, tens of thousands of Canadian families and workers depend on the forestry sector for their livelihoods. It is an important part of the Canadian economy, which is why the Prime Minister, Ministers, and MPs are announcing investments in pulp and paper mills across Canada.  The investments are being made through the Pulp and Paper Green Transformation Program and will improve the competitiveness and environmental performance of pulp and paper mills across the country. By investing in innovation and new product development, you Government is working to help protect forestry jobs, as well as create new jobs for Canada’s next generation of forestry workers. Did You Know That…Media are reporting Canadians have paid more than $27 million in political party subsidies in 2010.  Your Government believes eliminating the subsidy for political parties is in the public’s best interest. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says, “None of them should get one red cent. Political parties ought to be raising money on their own” (Postmedia, January 6, 2010). We agree; parties should do their own fundraising, not live off taxpayer funded handouts. For more information: http://taxpayer.com/issues/federal/fed-stop-vote-tax

Did You Know That…
Recently, Ministers Menzies and Blackburn announced that your Government will invest additional funding in the Canada Summer Jobs program to create as many as 3,500 more jobs for students next summer.  Your Government knows that there are too many young people looking for work, which is why we are making a new, permanent investment in the Canada Summer Jobs program.  The new jobs will give more students much needed employment during the summer and the opportunity to gain the skills and experience they need to succeed.  And the new jobs also support local economies in communities across Canada by providing small businesses and not-for-profit organizations with employees who will help meet their needs.  For more information: http://news.gc.ca/web/article-eng.do?m=/index&nid=582039

Did You Know That… Prime Minister Stephen Harper made minor changes to the federal Ministry. The Prime Minister is pleased with the exceptional way in which his cabinet has served Canadians, particularly during the difficulties of the global economic recession. That is why we are keeping Canada’s economic team in place. However, due to the Honourable Jim Prentice moving on, we are fine tuning the Ministry. The Prime Minister once again demonstrated that the economy is his number one priority by appointing a Minister of State  for Finance to further strengthen your Government's commitment to creating jobs and economic growth. The recent changes are consistent with our intention to maintain the policies that brought us through the global recession and that are necessary to continue the fragile economic recovery. For more information: http://pm.gc.ca/eng/media.asp?category=1&id=3863&featureId=6&pageId=26

Did You Know That… Recently, Heath Minister Leona Aglukkaq announced that the Government of Canada will launch larger, updated health warning messages and a toll-free quitline on cigarette and little cigar packages as part of a campaign to encourage Canadians to quit smoking. The Government is committed to keeping Canadians safe and healthy. In Canada, smoking accounts for the premature death of more than 37,000 Canadians a year.  Smoking also causes chronic diseases, including lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. Health warning labels on cigarette packages already exist in Canada.  With the recent announcement, your Government is acting to increase the size of the warning to 75 per cent of the packaging with newer, stronger images. The recent announcement comes in addition to other anti-smoking measures by your Government, including the Cracking Down on Tobacco Marketing Aimed at Youth Act, which is now law.  The new law will also ban flavours that would appeal to children, sets minimum package sizes and bans all tobacco advertising.  We have also invested funds in preventing contraband tobacco.
