Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, celebrated the conclusion of another framework agreement on self-government with the Whitecap Dakota First Nation.  The Government is working with First Nations to create jobs and growth in their communities. Transparent and accountable First Nations governments is an important part in creating a better environment for economic development, which will help create much needed jobs and growth on reserves across Canada. Self-government agreements are one means of building sound governance and institutional capacity that allow Aboriginal communities to contribute to, and participate in, the decisions that affect their lives and carry out effective relationships with other governments. They also provide greater certainty over rights to natural resources, contributing to a more positive investment climate and creating greater potential for economic development, jobs and growth.  Our Government is working to build a future in which First Nations are self-sufficient and prosperous, making their own decisions, managing their own affairs and making strong contributions to the country as a whole.    We will continue to work with First Nation partners across Canada to deliver tangible and lasting results and ensure First Nations are well-positioned to be full participants in a strong Canadian economy.  For more information: http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/harper-government-whitecap-dakota-first-nation-celebrate-signing-framework-agreement-1610982.htm

Did You Know That… In a keynote speech at the World Economic Forum, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, highlighted Canada’s economic strengths and framed the choices Canada faces as we work to secure long-term prosperity for our citizens in a difficult global environment.  The Prime Minister made it clear to the world that our number-one priority is prosperity - that is jobs and economic growth.  Our wealth is based on the good, growth oriented policies, the tough choices and hard work done in the past.  Under our Government, Canada will make the transformations necessary to sustain economic growth, job creation and prosperity, now and for the next generation.  This means making better economic choices now and preparing for the demographic pressures the Canadian economy faces.  We will continue: to keep tax rates down; to make the key investments in science and technology necessary to sustain a modern, competitive economy; and to advance our trade linkages.  For more information:  pm.gc.ca
