MP Ted Menzies Brings 2010 Olympic Torch Prototype to Nanton Days Parade
August 05, 2009
Ottawa – Ted Menzies, Member of Parliament for Macleod and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, helped host an event for Canadians to see first-hand the 2010 Olympic torch prototype. The torch was displayed during the Nanton Days Parade on August 3rd, 2009 and former Olympians Andrea Nugent and Glenys Bakker were the parade marshals throughout the day. “I am extremely pleased the Nanton Days Parade was a success and that the 2010 Olympic torch prototype was able to add to the Olympic-themed parade,” said Menzies. “The Olympics bring countries and communities together. The Nanton parade was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate our community coming together and celebrating athletes.” The Olympic Torch Relay is a 106-day journey that will bring all parts of the country together and unite communities as we prepare to welcome the world to the 2010 Winter Games. The Torch will cross the ocean from Greece to Victoria, British Columbia, and then begin a 45,000 kilometre trip across Canada, involving more than 12,000 torch bearers. With stops in every province and territory, the route for the Olympic Torch Relay is expected to pass through 1000 communities and reach approximately 90 percent of the Canadian population. The Olympic Torch Relay journey will end at the Opening Ceremony in Vancouver on February 12, 2010, with the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron to signal the start of the 2010 Winter Games. The Olympic torch will pass through the town of Nanton on January 18, 2010. “The games will unite all Canadians by celebrating our passion for sport, sharing our pride in the talent and achievements of our athletes, and highlighting our creative spirit,” said Menzies.
