Governments of Canada and Alberta Create Jobs, Build Communities in High River
May 22, 2009

High River--Residents of High River will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to upgrade 5th St. SE, announced today by Ted Menzies, Member of Parliament for Macleod and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and the Honourable George Groeneveld, MLA for Highwood and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthen the economy, create jobs and improve the quality of life for its residents.

This project will improve transportation efficiency and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.

The governments of Canada and Alberta will each invest up to $3,000,000.00 in the project. The Town of High River will contribute the balance of the total eligible project cost of up to $9,660,000.00.

“The governments of Canada and Alberta recognize the importance of infrastructure investments to building a strong economy and creating jobs, which is why we are working together to accelerate progress on projects.” said Menzies.  “Furthermore, upgrading on 5th Street SE has been needed for a long time and I am happy to be a part of a Government that recognizes the need for improvements.”

“I am pleased, as I know residents of High River will be, to know this much needed road work will be moving forward,” said Minister Groeneveld.

This project is one of more than 73 across the province that will get underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $227 million announced on May 21. The governments of Canada and Alberta have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in Alberta communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
