A Renewed Commitment in times of Global Economic Uncertainty

A new session of Parliament has now begun and it is expected to be like no other.  Canadians have voiced their trust in this Government with a renewed and strengthened mandate and the knowledge that we will guide Canada through these challenging economic times.

We are already beginning to see the effects of the global downturn and Canadians can be assured that this Government is mindful of the privilege and responsibility with which we have been entrusted.

Our Government is committed to ensuring Canada’s continued economic success at this time of global economic instability.  The Speech from the Throne laid out the Government’s plan to help protect Canada’s economic security by:
• Reforming global finance;
• Ensuring sound budgeting;
• Securing jobs for families and communities;
• Expanding investment and trade; and
• Making government more effective.

As Canada navigates today’s economic uncertainty, it is even more important that we keep our sights fixed on responsible fiscal management.  Hard decisions will be needed to keep federal spending under control and focused on results.

The Speech from the Throne set out our Government’s plan to build on the work of our previous mandate, focusing on the priorities that make a difference in the lives of Canadians, namely;
• Securing our energy future;
• Tackling climate change and preserving Canada’s environment;
• Expanding opportunities for Canadians;
• Keeping Canadians safe;
• Contributing to global security; and
• Building stronger institutions.
Canadians can rest assured that we will devote all our energy to addressing the challenges that families and businesses face, both today and in the future.

With the strong governing mandate outlined in the Throne Speech, Canadian families and businesses can be assured that not only are they protected for the future, buy they will also emerge from this period of global economic instability stronger than ever before.

As your voice in Ottawa, I am humbled by the opportunity to represent you.  We have difficult work ahead but you have my commitment that I will work relentlessly to address the challenges that we must face together, today and in the future.
