Menzies Attends Former Prime Minister Joe Clark’s Official Portrait Unveiling
May 27, 2008

On May 27, 2008 Menzies attended the unveiling of the official portrait of former Prime Minister, The Right Honourable Joe Clark. Menzies went to the event to congratulate Mr. Clark for his past and continued efforts to improve the lives of Canadians. Mr. Clark was the 16th Prime Minister of Canada, and is also a High River native. He served as Prime Minister from 1979 until 1980, and was both the youngest and first Alberta-born Prime Minister in Canadian history.

Mr. Clark entered the House of Commons in 1972 and won the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party in 1976. While in Parliament Mr. Clark concentrated on reducing government spending, encouraging private sector growth; developing an energy self-sufficiency policy and strengthening federal/provincial relations. After his government was defeated in 1980, he served as Leader of the Official Opposition and is widely thought to be one of Canada’s most effective opposition leaders.

Menzies hopes that Mr. Clark’s legacy of service to Canada will be an inspiration for young Canadians looking to make a difference in this country and the world.

“Congratulations Joe and thanks for all your dedication, hardwork and service to this great country!”
